As individuals and organizations in the learning field, we should know and be able to monitor the full extent of the effects of the Coronavirus on the people and organizations in our field—recognizing that there will be both devastation and opportunity for individuals and organizations.

A different kind of prep
Today I realized that when I turn 60 in June I will enter the high-risk group, but I don’t have a will or anybody to act as my power of attorney for financial and health care decisions, or anybody to be my executor. I also need someone to take responsibility for rehoming my two new cats if I die. Finally, I realized that if my mother and stepdad get sick in New Mexico, I probably won’t be able to travel to see them. Somehow, I have not thought of all these things until now. Have you?
I’m not even sure if attorneys are still allowed to conduct business now, so it may not be possible for me to obtain legal docs. I do have the “Five Wishes” guide that I could complete and hang on my inside front door (or wherever paramedics would be most likely to find it). In a reciprocal arrangement, my neighbors have agreed to be pandemic buddies in case I get sick.
I was let go from my job on 3/5 for reasons unrelated to the pandemic. Looking for a job right now complicates matters immensely. I started anti-anxiety meds and antidepressants to help preserve executive function. They do help.
Thanks for sharing. You bring us good advice for all of us to get our affairs in order and a heart-wrenching story about having to look for a job now. I hear that lots of people want to know how to train online or want people who can do that, perhaps there are opportunities for you. Best wishes!
It can be hard to stay positive in such a situation, and as one who is well over 60 and also not working, I can also identify with the fear. Like you, my primary worry would be for my pets. However, whether it's denial or focusing on the positive, I refuse to allow any worry to dominate my days. I'm healthy and I expect to remain that way. If you are healthy, it is more likely that any infection would be mild, and this is the time to build your immunity as much as you can: hydrate, exercise, meditate, learn something new, love on those cats! - talk to your parents often, maybe now is s good time to ask them to share memories that aren't about the pandemic. Laugh. No, really. You can do it.
It's been shown that worry and anxiety can exacerbate illness, if not cause it. Your meds can help, but other interventions can, as well. It may be a good time to reach out to your physician to ask for advice and if the office can put you on its contact list. Your local animal shelter may (as mine does) have a form to help you provide for the care and re-homing of your cats, if the worst should happen. LegalZoom has forms for wills and living trusts so you can put details on paper. These are things you can do now to alleviate some of the stress. Finally, there may be some relief for you in the stimulus, since unemployment has been extended beyond the 'usual' requirements. Worth looking into. A crisis is no reason to stop living your life. It's a barrier to overcome and make you stronger in the process.
